Grooming our dogs need not be expensive if we have the skills to do it ourselves. I have a Golden Retriever and those hairs are really something. I think brushing twice a day toned down the shedding so I'm doing that religiously. With the nail clipping, I'm ashamed to say I'm petrified of doing my dog's nails! So, to the groomers he goes - at least he can be taken cared of well. Lately, I've been reading on the different grooming tools we can buy. I'm trying to learn how to properly clip my dog's hair. I don't blame you one bit! I definitely think it's important to feel comfortable when any product we use on our pets. And yes, I am certain the reason for some of the bad reviews on FURminator are simply due to people using them incorrectly. Definitely not an every day brush but really works amazingly when used right!

I like how you mentioned you only use the FURminator once a month. I've heard mixed reviews on the product, and like you said, I think owners over use it. We use our pin brush regularly but I'm a bit reluctant to spend money on expensive grooming tools. With Cody's double coat, I know we need a few more tools but I want to feel more confident in the products before buying!

Great question Kimberly! For me, it depends on the season, and the amount of undercoat buildup.
Through the winter I will let it build up more, but summer, I keep it all brushed out as much as possible. Spring and Fall is hit and miss. If I notice too much build up, i'll go in and do a proper job to get rid of all that access, otherwise I will use a normal pin brush with a quick 10 minute grooming session about twice a week.

We like the pin brush best, but Mom will also use the rake and once in a great while the Furminator. Our groomer does the best job with her big powerful blow dryers.

Some people probably think you only need one brush, but it's the same with golden retrievers...a good variety is needed for different times!
