Hi guys, and happy Friday! Today I am handing the blog over to Jordan Walker, as he shares some great ways to keep our your dog fit. Enjoy!
Dogs need exercise to stay in shape and remain active. While most pet owners love to walk their dogs, they might not have the same sentiments. Jordan Walker, the lead content curator of Coops and Cages, shares what other fun activities your dog can partake in.
Being a responsible pet owner means allocating more time for your furry pal’s play time and exercise. Unfortunately, because of tight schedules, not everybody can spare even a single minute to their pets, leaving them bored, disinterested, and sluggish over time. The truth is that when you accompany your dogs in their exercise regime, they become physically and mentally healthy. And, the good news is that frequent dog walks aren’t the only solution. Here are other ways you can get their blood pumping without taking them in the park.
Hiking
Hiking is a new activity for dogs. Although it seems like a combination of walking and running, there is an added twist here as they get to do it in a fresh yet natural environment. The sight of trees, birds, and other flora helps relax the dog and his overall well-being. Aside from that, they get to enjoy a lot because they’ll have lots of time chasing other wildlife and trying to climb off trails.
Swimming
What most owners don’t know is that their dogs are natural-born swimmers. This is a common notion because not all dogs like water. If you have a pooch that enjoys water, be proud and use it to your advantage. Take note that swimming is a great form of low-impact exercise that is also more fun than walking and running. While there are a couple other concerns involved, such as the body of water the dog will swim in, there are still plenty of options out there. Swimming pools are among them. But, owners must still practice caution. Even though these places are hygienic, the chlorine content can potentially irritate their skin. Natural bodies of water, on the other hand, are full of algae and dead fish, which houses loads of bacteria.
Bike Riding
Having your dog along while riding a bike is also a great idea. Even if it is a bit similar to walking and running, the use of the bike makes it more challenging and fun. In this activity, leads are used to tag the dog. Just be sure to take things slowly so as to avoid accidents.
Frisbee
Playing with Frisbees or flying discs is an enjoyable sport that can be enjoyed by both humans and dogs. In general, canines like to fetch balls and discs. Due to its unique trajectory and shape, they enjoy it far more than mere sticks.
Food Puzzles
This is a simple yet engaging activity that your dog will surely love. Food puzzles will require a dog to solve a puzzle prior food will be dispensed to them. If you don’t want to buy such product, a simple hide and seek with their food bowl will do.
Dogs and humans aren’t meant to live inactive lifestyles. Not only does it make their life dull, it may also potentially lead to various illnesses and other ailments. By making sure your dog gets enough exercise, you are helping him live a long and healthy life, free of illnesses. At the same time, you end up healthy too.
As an owner, you must always be aware of the level of activity suggested for your dog. This is because each breed differs from the rest in terms of activity intensity and duration, and you don’t want to overdose them.

These are awesome tips! We love taking the girls on new adventures, walks and hiking! We got Phoenix into swimming this year but we had to stop when she started to have skin trouble. They also love puzzle toys! :D
ReplyDeleteWe do too! So much fun!
DeleteAnd yea, poor thing! I remember you mentioning that in your posts!
We love hiking. Even though we have a pond we aren't into swimming although sometimes when it is super hot Fenris does enjoy wading out into the Gulf when we go walking on the beach.
ReplyDeleteWe love hiking too! Swimming is my FAV thing to do in the summer!!

Neither of our dogs enjoys playing Frisbee. Our GSD was a Frisbee addict so we miss playing. We stick to walking but need to find some fun food puzzles for them. Fun tips and great Flashback photo!
ReplyDeleteMine aren't big on Frisbee either, but the rest of the activities listed here are fan favorites in my house!
DeleteGreat tips. We love our dog sports too, although nose work is more mentally challenging, tracking is both mental and physical. Working out can be so much fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat point! You pups are paw-some with your nose work too!
DeleteBrilliant post! Keeping fit is so important!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I sent you an email regarding how I was finding AddThis a while ago!
Oh! I didn't see that email!!! I'll check my spam!! So sorry!
DeleteI like doing things like this that require interacting with Cocoa. Walking and running are awesome but sometimes it's nice to play catch or do jumps and sprints. Keeping minds and bodies busy :)
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right!
DeleteGreat activity list, you're so right dogs and humans are not meant to lead inactive lives! My all time favorite activity to do with our dogs is hiking. I love bike riding but it was too difficult to ride with my Husky, she kept getting too close to the bike or tried to get in front of it so I just bought a bike leash! It keeps the dog at your side while riding and prevents them from getting too close to the bike or out in front of it.
ReplyDeleteLove & Biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
Ah great idea Cathy!!!
DeleteI would imagine any dog would enjoy most if not all of those activities.
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure!!
DeleteGreat tips - it's really so easy to keep your dog fit - they WANT to be fit too!
ReplyDeleteSo true!
DeleteWe do a lot of walking here with Mom. She really wishes she could ride bikes with us (if Lightning would even go near one) but her bones are too fragile to risk that. Ciara thinks it would be really cool to bike ride alongside Mom..
ReplyDeleteWoos - Ciara and Lightning
I bet! And aww poor mom!! I'm sure you guys get plenty of fun walkies though!!
DeleteWe do all of these but bike riding!
ReplyDeleteNice!!!
DeleteSo many ways to spend time with the dogs and keep them and yourself fit! And yes, she was a cutie!
ReplyDeleteShe sure was!!!
DeleteThere really are so many different ways to keep ourselves and our dogs fit! We just need to get out there!!!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteGreat ideas for exercising! Walking is fun but sometimes it can get a bit boring; it's fun to do some different things too.
