I thought it would be fun to share some of the coolest facts I have learned about husky fur.
Did you know?
Siberian Husky fur not only keeps them toasty warm in those cold winter months, but also acts as a cooling system on those super hot days! For that reason, it is important to note the fact that a husky should never be shaved.
Siberian Huskies shed year round, however, twice a year, they lose their entire undercoat to make room for new fur coming in.
Huskies very rarely need baths. Most sibe's are naturally odorless and care for their fur as a cat would. By using their tongues to bath themselves. But that is not the only reason they rarely need baths - Huskies have sensitive skin and too many baths will not only create itchy, dry skin, but will also dry out the natural oils in their fur.
Grooming your husky is an ongoing chore. Since their fur decides to shed so darn much, brushing can not only help decrease the amount of hair you find in your house, but it keeps their luscious fur looking just that.....luscious.
Last but certainly not least, did you know that a huskies fur acts like an umbrella?
Yep, a sibe is well known for being able to ward off any weather that comes their way. Not just snow. If you ever see someone walking a husky on a rainy day, take a look at their fur. The rain drops literally slide down their fur in droplets, thus keeping their skin nice and dry.
However, the fact that their fur acts as an umbrella can make it difficult to bath a husky.
In the photo to the right, you can see my girl Lexus when I was giving her a bath. Their fur just wants to refuse the water. It takes a long time to try and soak all of their fur in order to get the shampoo into it.

We know all about that husky fur and brushing and bathing here too. We get to go to the groomer's for our baths because Mom says she could never handle us in the tub:) Some days we love to be brushed, others not so much. Even though Mom sweeps and/or vacuums every day, there is ALWAYS fur to be found:)
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday.
Woos - Ciara and Lightning
But could you imagine if mom didn't vacuum all the time?? EEEEEk!
DeleteOur GSDs would blow their coat and it looked like huge cotton balls everywhere! I love the tub shot! ♥
ReplyDeletehaha, yea it sort of comes out in big tuffs doesn't it?
DeleteThanks Melissa :)
I bet every dog wishes they were a husky so they didn't have to have very many baths! Actually, our beagle Cricket has kind of coarse fur too that is difficult to wet down for a bath.

I can imagine that you're right! hahaha!
DeleteOMD, that photo of Lexus in the tub is SO precious! I love her eyes, they make me melt! As you know, I can relate to the Husky fur thing. Thank heaven for the Furminator, that's all I can say!

OMD! We LIVE by the furminator hahahahaha!!!!
DeleteI used to watch the rain roll off Bogart Sam's fur when we walked in the rain. He HATED the rain tho'...
ReplyDeleteNow show that dog a snowstorm & he was raring to go!!!!
I miss my Husky boy even to this day....
((hugs)) Sherri-Ellen & Siddhartha Henry =^,.^=
My one husky hates the rain too. It is quite inconvenient that she does too because she refuses to go to the bathroom if it's raining!!!
DeleteI'm sure you do miss him xoxoxo
Love,I saw one thursday as I was walking home, and she made a beeline for me,she saw me from across the road and was making a fuss, she just wanted me to say hello,so I did, crossed the road special for her and gave her lots of loving...made for a very happy girl, funny thing is she never saw me before,xx Rachel

Thanks for hosting it too!
DeleteSo many people shave their dogs in summer, not understanding that it won't help them stay as cool as their own fur would. It's lucky you don't have to bathe them too often if it's that hard to get them wet!
ReplyDeleteYep, far too many people make that mistake, and it is double the trouble when referring to shaving a husky, big no no! And oh boy, don't I know it!!!
DeleteWhat great facts, I just cringe when people want to shave their double coated dogs. urgh
ReplyDeleteOh I know!!! If people knew anything about they breed they live their lives with, they wouldn't!!!
DeleteIt's nice you don't have to bath them often and they are pretty much odorless. I never knew that!
ReplyDeleteYep! Thank dog too, because my huskies are not fond of bath time!
DeleteHusky coats sound a lot like Chessie coats but we do get times of little to no shedding.
ReplyDeleteNice :) Huskies go through the shedding real bad twice a year, but still, year round they do shed more than people think.
DeleteThat is very interesting facts about how Sibes keep their own fur in perfect condition.
ReplyDeleteRight? I have said before how cat like siberians are, it is just uncanny
DeleteI think our coats are similar. It's difficult to get my undercoat wet when I have a bath - everything rolls off the topcoat!
ReplyDeleteSounds very similar!!!!
