I have decided to do a bit of a fun Thoughtless Thursday post.
The other day, I started thinking of different meanings of names. Human names, pet names, any names. I thought it would be fun to see why you chose the names you did for your pets (if you chose them) and what their names mean.
I'll start with mine.
Koda - When we adopted him, his name was Miles. I didn't think it suited him at all, so I began researching names and their meanings. I have always liked the name Dakoda, but wanted to shorten it to Koda. The name itself is a Native American term for "friend" or "companion."
Mika - Mika had her name already when we adopted her. I love her name, so did not want to change it. The meaning of Mika is "Gift from God."
Lexus - Lex was a pup when we adopted her, after her short couple of months living with a backyard breeder. I decided to name her Lexus, which means "defender of the people."
Your Turn!
What made you choose your pets name? Do you know the meaning?

There really is no rhyme or reason as to why we have our names...mama says I just "looked" like Chloe and LadyBug already had her name when we adopted her!!
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that either! Names are fantastic all on their own without having any certain meaning to them!
DeleteYep I absolutely know the meaning of Dakota's name! It is the same as your "Koda".....when we got Dakota I looked up the name because I had always loved it and it means "trusted friend" in American Indian, (or companion, friend as you said, but when I looked it up at that time, it said "Trusted friend")
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is you shortened yours to "Koda".....and I often call my Dakota "Koda" or "Dakota Boda"....or just "Boda" why I add a "B" who knows? lol xoxo
I love Dakota Boda! haha!! Too cute! And yes, I your absolutely right, since Koda is a shortened form of Dakota, or Dakoda, the meanings are the same :)
DeleteOh, all their names have such beautiful meanings! I'll have to check to see what mine means!
ReplyDeleteOz
Thanks!! When you find out, come on back and let me know!!
DeleteYour Huskies' names have lovely meanings.
ReplyDeleteI was almost named Clover, but they decided it didn't sound right so it became Clowie. It's spelt like that to be like David Bowie! My bipeds are weird.
haha! I love it!!!
DeleteWell, Earl is a royal name, and that suits Earl just right, haha!!!! Ethel, I don't know!!! But what a brilliant post!
ReplyDeletesumskersandearlskers13.blogspot.com
Aw thanks!! And yes Earl is most royal! :)
DeleteBentley's name means a clearing covered with grass. haha! We named him Bentley when he belonged to our friend although they named him something else. When we got him, he was renamed. He looks like a Bentley. ☺
ReplyDeletehaha! That's too funny! But no matter what it means, I SO agree! He definitely looks like a Bentley!
DeleteI love how you picked your dogs' names, and all the meanings of them!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby's father had a beagle named Cricket once, so he wanted to name our beagle that. When we got Sheba and her brother together, I wanted to name him after a dog we had known, Moses, so wanted a biblical name for her as well. I think technically in the bible it was the "Queen of Sheba". Luke I just thought of....I might have been thinking biblical again (I'm not really religious...LOL, but I did go to Christian college!). I looked up Luke and it means "light" - so I like that, since he's the "light of our lives"!
Jan, Wag 'n Woof Pets
Light of our lives, I love that!!!!
DeleteNo clue what my name means, but Mom liked it because it is short and sounded a bit British.
ReplyDeletehaha! And there's nothing wrong with that!
DeleteWell according to nameberry the meaning of Sampson is sun, which I think is fitting, because he brings such light and warmth into our lives. We chose it because we wanted two dogs and were trying to make it cute. I however did not know I was spelling it different than the biblical spelling. :-) On the flip, apparently Delilah can mean night. LOL who knew such a random thought could really peg the personalities of the dogs we named?
ReplyDeletehaha! Wow! That is so cool how it ended up being sun and night!!
DeleteHmmm, no deep hidden meanings or significance...I just like the name Jack...and he looked like a Jack.
ReplyDeleteAh, I love the name Jack, and I think it suits him perfectly!
DeleteHmm... I have to agree with SlimDoggy. I really have no idea where Jade got her name. She just looked like a Jade to me!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the name Jade!! As a matter of fact Jade is short for my daughters name!
DeleteEveryone of us has a meaning behind our name......but you don't have enough space for all the details...Mom could write a book about them! So heres just mine....when I found them they didn't like my name...well it did suck.....but playing on the radio was the "Credence Clearwater" song "Susie Q", Mom loved that song....so thats ME, Susie....Da Sus
ReplyDeleteDa Sus
The Mad Scots
Aw I love it!!!!
DeleteWe don't know the meaning of our names, but I was named after the mom's dad and Ernie was named after Ernest Hemmingway because he's a polycat and Zoey was named after...well, nobuddy. The mom just liked that name. ~Wally
ReplyDeleteFantastic :) Before he passed, I called my Grandfather Wally <3
DeleteWe didn't name either of our current dogs. Hailey means fields of hay; Zaphod is a fictional character.
ReplyDeleteInteresting!!!
DeleteWe know very clearly what his name means. hehe Happy Thoughtless Thursday, Ruckus the Eskie
ReplyDeletehahaha!!! Me too!
DeleteWhen Annabelle was adopted to me her name was FRITZY. Why I cannot imagine. But she was too dainty and girly, she had to have a pretty name. I chose in the "A" family because of Abby. As it turns out, unbeknowst to me, but coming from the Rescue group that saved her, her kitten was named Bluebelle, so really it's the perfect name!
ReplyDeleteAww that is such a sweet story, thank you!
Deletewhat great meanings of your dogs names. Gambler I named after kenny rogers gambler, hoping he was going to be a winner. Glory was after lady gaga edge of glory, that song came on and I said Glory will be her name. I also love anything patriotic so I'm glad I went with it. Nellie was to go along with Norman, not really sure how I came up with it. They all don't really mean anything or I have never looked them up is more like it.
ReplyDeleteThe way we choose our dogs' names in kind of involved lol. Short version...Thunder is named for a hunting spot (SRR's North Point Thunder Bay). Storm is named because the night we brought her home it was storming, (Irish's Great Lakes Nor'easter). Freighter because his registered name is SRR's Northern Gales Of November. His reg name came about because he was born in November so we kept with the weather theme and added the word north and named him after a line in the song the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
