How to teach your dog to "Go to bed"

Hi everyone, welcome to another training tips day with the Sibe Tribe.
Last week we went over some ways to help your dog stop begging for food. If you missed that, feel free to head back and check it out here.

Now that your all caught up, we can move on to the second part of teaching your dog to stop begging. The easiest and simple way of doing this, is to teach your dog the "Go to bed" command.
Keep in mind that this command can come in handy in a variety of ways.

Steps to teach your dog to "Go to bed."

  • Choose one spot in your house where their bed will regularly be. (you can change it up later)
  • Put a leash on your dog
  • Have a treat in your hand
  • With the treat, lure your dog over to their bed.
  • While your walking there, use the words "Go to Bed" or "Bed Time."
  • Once you get there, ask your dog to sit - stay - on the bed, and give him the treat
*HINT - When you praise your dog for sitting in his bed, keep praise to a minimum.
If your dogs are anything like mine, when you praise they get excited, so keep it minimum for this one so your dog stays put on his bed.

After doing the above mentioned steps a few times over a period of about
a week, it's time to move on to the next step.
Now you need to teach your dog to stay on his bed.

Next :

  • Repeat the above steps until you reach his bed
  • Praise minimally, and give a treat
  • Make sure your using your "stay" command at this point
  • Now hold your hand up in a stop position, and say "stay," then walk away.
  • If your dog gets up right away, calmly walk him back to bed using the above steps
  • Work on this daily, until your dog learns exactly what your asking for
By staying consistent with your training, your dog will catch on quick (given a few reminders here and there) and always be sure your using your command words while training.
In this case - sit, stay.

Lexus and Koda on their bed - (carpet)
Note my little Lexus has the Elvis lip going on! haha

If you don't use dog beds no worries!
My huskies are not fans of dog beds, so I use the carpet by the kitchen door. While we are eating dinner, they go to their "bed" - carpet.
Once your dogs have mastered this, feel free to add beds around the house or move the bed to where you need your dog to go.

*Always remember to take your training slow, and keep it positive.
Rushing your dog to learn a new trick or command will only frustrate both of you, and won't get you anywhere. Every dog learns at a different speed, so just go with the flow.

  3. We have beds around the house, but when we hear go to your bed, we magically know exactly which bed the mom means.

  4. "Go to your bed" is one of the first things we taught Veruca and Ava. It is so helpful when you want to keep them in one spot for any reason, Although, I think Veruca would stay on her bed most time no matter what the situation.

  8. I like your hint about not over-praising, since the idea is to have them be calm and settle down into their bed or spot. We use this command a lot and it really comes in handy sometimes.

  9. Interestin' stuff. I wonder if I should hold out on nappin' in order to get extra treats. Hmmm... I wonder if that works for cats.

  10. Mom says she needs to work on this at dinner time. When it is the "real" bedtime, no worries. Phantom goes to bed on his own at 8:30 sharp every night:) Ciara and Lightning head to their beds when they know Mom is headed upstairs because they know that is bedtime treat time:)

    1. See, and that's all about routine. They are so used to it. It will be the same after training go to bed when it's dinner time too. Eventually, it will become a routine that when the humans are eating, they go to their beds :)

  11. The "bed" command was one of the first we taught our pups ;-) We use it when we eat & whenever we need the pups to stay out of our way, really! Nice job explaining how to teach it!

  12. Luke is the first dog we've trained to do this, and honestly, this is one of the best commands! It comes in so handy! Luke is actually to the point where we don't even always have to tell him to go to his bed, he knows when he should be there and does it automatically....such as if I'm working in the kitchen or we're eating supper.

  14. Great tips. We have not really trained that specific command but we do enforce room boundaries.

  15. We sleep wherever we want so it would be hard to train us this way. MOL! But seriously, the key with any training whether dog or cat is consistency. :)

  17. I don't use a bed, but they point to a spot and say "settle down". A command like this is worth the time it takes to learn.

  18. Great training tips! We don't usually tell them to go to bed unless one of us really goes to bed then we say go to bed to get them to go upstairs and go to bed for real.

    1. My huskies do that too, every time it's bed time, I just say bed time! And they trot along behind me to the bedroom!

  19. This is such a useful command; great for any time you need your dogs to stay clear of the front door, wait to greet visitors or keep out of the way for some reason. I like the tip about not over praising your dog to avoid them getting excited during the exercise. My dogs go to the rug in our living room, we use it each time we get home or when visitors arrive.

    1. I am still working on when visitors come over haha! Koda gets VERY excited when visitors come and it's hard to keep him in one spot, but we are getting there!
