I have always had quite a bit of interest in my dog training related posts, so this is the first in my new official series.
I have decided to start small, so this post will be short, simple and sweet!
I see this question a lot -
How do I teach my dog to stop begging?
The begging I am referring to, is when the family sits down to a lovely dinner, and you look over only to see your dog(s) staring and drooling at your plate while you try and eat.
This doesn't bother some people, but for some, it does.
Personally, I am not overly bothered by it, but "the man of the house" does not like having the dogs in the dining room while we eat.
Solution?
For me, the solution is simple.
My huskies wait in the kitchen on their beds while we eat.
They all know the stay command well, and when it's dinner time, I ask them to stay and we go eat. Simple. But what about dogs who refuse to stay? Or those who don't have the option of keeping their dogs in the kitchen during dinner?
Teach the "bed" command.
I will go into more detail about the bed command on a future training post, but the idea is to train your dogs to go lay in their beds when it's dinner time. This is easier than you might think, I promise!
It is much easier teaching "bed" than it is to teach a dog not to look at you while you eat.

DeleteMy sisters and I aren't too bad when it comes to begging. We hang out on the floor in wait and that is about it, but cat bro Bert is out of hand. He jumps right on the dinner table which is why if we have other humans over for food, he is locked up!

DeleteI don't know, that picture of the begging dog is a pretty cute. Our dogs usually lay under the table when we eat. They don't beg in the traditional sense, but they are around in case anything falls to the floor.

ReplyDeleteBOL! Who begs? I'm trained to lay quietly under the table while the family eats. I do lay there quietly, unless there are guests, when I am put in a "down stay" back away from the table. No one is allowed to feed me from the table because of my allergies.

We tried having our huskies out with us and lay under the table which worked great.....until my 4 year old daughter decided to start giving all of her food to the dogs when we weren't lookin ;)
DeleteSometimes the answer is really rather simple, isn't it? Personally, I don't mind if the dogs stare at us when we're eating, as long as there's no whining or jumping. Our solution has always been simple too....we never feed the dogs from our dishes when we're eating. They know that when we're finished, they'll get a nibble or get to lick the plate, or get a treat when we've finished picking up. Being young, Luke has tried to jump of course, but the go to bed command works very well with him.

DeleteAtka never begs, but in the past few months Mauja has started to get a little more pushy. It's only at dinner time though! She typically gives up after a minute or two ;)
ReplyDeletelol my huskies used to beg, but it was my fault because I always picked off things from my plate and fed it to them.....that made things worse, so we had to put a stop to it lol
DeleteIt can be annoying, but the cats are far more annoying than Rumpy. Got any tips for training them?

DeleteBentley doesn't beg...too much. He will tap your leg or clear his throat in case we forget he is conveniently located at our feet. BOL!

DeleteYour dogs' beds are in the kitchen? LOL! We don't allow our dogs to be in the dining room while we are eating. They know to go into the living room and wait there until we're done - not that they don't try to sneak a peek or sniff now & then but you have to be consistent & not give in to their adorable faces. Koda is so cute looking over the gate!

They have beds everywhere! haha! I spend a lot of my time in the kitchen working from my laptop, and they always want to be with me, so I have beds for them in here. But we don't eat in the kitchen, separate dining room for that :)

ReplyDeleteBut there is this one person who visits us who ignored my bipeds' instructions about not giving me food - I always go and drool next to him when he has food because I know he likes to share with me.

DeleteWe make our dogs go lay down while we eat. I really don't care where they lay, sometimes even under the table, as long as they lay and not beg.

DeleteGreat tips, our gang lays under or chairs at the island when we eat. Sometimes g and g will jump on the island and watch us eat.
