Today, I thought I would go a little more into detail, and share how to make some yummy sweet potato treats for your dog!
What exactly are the benefits?
- Sweet Potato contains the highest amino acid of any of it's cousins in the starch family, and amino acids are super important to your dogs health!
- They help to maintain healthy, strong and lean muscles in your dog.
- Amino acids in sweet potatoes also increase your dogs antioxidant activity in their bodies.
What are antioxidants?
- Antioxidants are essential to help keep their bodies free of radicals that can cause cancer and other harmful diseases.
- Antioxidants have also been shown to rid the liver of fatty cells and keep organs healthy.
- Sweet Potatoes are very high in fiber, therefore work wonders on a dogs digestive system.
So, now that we have some facts out of the way, I know every dog out there is sitting at the computer right now, drool hanging from their furry faces, wondering how to get their paws on these sweet potatoes!
Obviously the first suggestion would be to have yourself a good food dehydrator, but if your like me, you haven't got around to buying one yet, so this one is for you!
Sweet Potato Dog Treats
- Preheat oven to about 175°
- Scrub your potatoes (no need to peel)
- Cut into slices (the thinner you cut, the shorter the cook time, but thicker slices will keep your dog chewing longer)
- Place slices on a cookie sheet in just one layer
- Bake for roughly 6 hours for chewy potato treats, or longer for a more crispy treat
- Let cool, serve and let your dogs enjoy their healthy snack!
You can feel good feeding your beloved fur baby your very own sweet potato treats, knowing there are no added preservatives, coloring, nothing!
Just chopped full of health benefits, and nutrients.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

DeleteYum and drool. Have a fabulous Friday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
And the very same to you Molly!
DeleteMy girls LOVE all things sweet potatoe! I always have some on hand. I usually just nuke them, but baking sounds like a much better way to prepare them; it's probably healthier. I will try baking them for sure next time. If you bake them, about how long will they stay fresh and how do you recommend storing them?

Nice! I do hope you get to try these out, and definitely let me know how Phoebe and Isis like them!
DeleteTake note I did change up my bake times and oven setting. I realize my exact times may not work for everyone, so I posted more of a guideline to go by for different ovens and thicker vs. thinner slices of sweet potato.
Anyways, the longer you dehydrate these, the longer they will keep for. This is because the dryer they become, the less moisture is inside of them, and moisture is what would cause them to go bad. So keep time depends on bake time. I recommend storing them basically in any air tight container. Even a Ziploc bag will work. Hope this helps!
Gosh those sweet potato treats look delicious......and they're obviously really good for dogs. What a GREAT idea!
ReplyDeletePam
Yes they are. Hmmmmmm.....wonder bout kitties!
DeleteMy sisters love these, I used to take mine and guard it for hours until I got bored and let someone else have it. Now I won't even put one in my mouth. Not a sweet potato fan, but Katie and Bailie are the veggie lovers and don't mind eating my portion. We dehydrate in the oven too. No need for a dehydrator.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly! Although I have been meaning to pick one up, the oven seems to work just fine!
DeleteI think I'll split the batch so that I can try chewy and crisp versions!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh sounds like a great plan!!
DeleteI LOVE when Ma makes me sweet potato chips. They are some of my favorite treats! Of course, I like when she makes herself baked sweet potato because I get to eat some of that too. Yum!
ReplyDeleteOz
Baked sweet potato is wonderful too I agree!

DeleteGreat post, my gang loves sweet potato's, I haven't made them myself yet. 6 hrs, wow that is a long time for goodness.
ReplyDeleteIt is a long time, but it is because they have be on such a low heat setting to properly dry them out. Well worth it in the end though!
DeleteWhat a great post, we love sweet potatoes! Mom makes us chips from time to time but we are going to try this method! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNice! I know you'll love them!

ReplyDeleteSuper yummy!
DeleteWe live in the south, of course we love sweet potatoes! BOL! My son gave me his dehydrator, so we make our own along with banana chips.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh I LOVE banana chips!!!!
DeleteHmmm, dehydrating the sweet potatoes is a good idea!
ReplyDeleteAnd super healthy too!
DeleteWe LOVE sweet potatoes and Mom does too. We are going to get her to use that dehydrator she bought to make us some of these yummy chips. Even she will enjoy them:)
ReplyDeleteWoos - Phantom, Ciara, and Lightning
I love sweet potatoes too! Let me know when you guys all try them!
DeleteI didn't like how long these took in the oven, so we got a dehydrator - turns out they take longer in that! LOL The dogs love them and I just made some last weekend.
ReplyDeleteBTW, one time I made them in the oven, I brushed them with coconut oil and sprinkled them with cinnamon. The dogs loved that too.
Lots of wags and woofs from the crew at Wag n Woof Pets
Yes, you can definitely spice them up however you like as well!!
DeleteThey do take a while to do, but SO well worth it! Interesting it takes longer to do in an actual dehydrator! haha!

ReplyDeleteOh yes!!! SO many benefits!
DeleteHailey eats sweet potato but doesn't love it. Phod only eats it because he doesn't want Hailey too. He really doesn't like non-meat treats.
ReplyDeleteAhh, to each their own I suppose! haha!
DeleteDakota loves sweet potato but we don't give it to him much because it makes his poop too soft :)
ReplyDeleteOh really? Interesting!
DeleteWe only give them in moderation as well of course, but they are such a healthy treat!
Haha! That picture of Koda is so funny. We feed Haley sweet potatoes pretty often and she loves them. Great advice and details on drying them.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! Ours love them too!
DeleteSweet potatoes don't seem to agree with my dogs so I only feed them sparingly. Good recipe though.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Every treat is not for every dog thats for sure. It's good to know which ones are ok to feed
